Can-can
musical in two acts
Music and lyrics: Cole Porter
Libretto: Abe Burrows
Broadway producers: Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin
Translation: Sergei Arkusha
Paris... The end of the 19th century... The golden age of science, art, culture, architecture, automotive engineering, and aviation... The era of modernism, the birth of radio, cinema, and cabaret... The Moulin Rouge is just beginning to welcome its first guests, the Eiffel Tower has not yet become a symbol of the city of lovers and romance, and the cancan is considered an extremely indecent spectacle. In Montmartre, in the heart of Parisian bohemian life, Mademoiselle Pistache, the owner of a small café, entertained the public every evening with a scandalous but very popular cancan. The young and ambitious judge Aristide Forestier disapproves of such an “indecent” dance and threatens to close Mademoiselle Pistachio's establishment if she does not stop performing the dance, which is prohibited by law. But will the zealous guardian of the law be able to resist the charms of the pretty dancer? After all, love cannot be regulated, and life is a dance that cannot be banned! The musical “Can-can” was created by Abe Burrows, who wrote the libretto, and Cole Porter, who wrote the music and lyrics. In 1953, it was staged on Broadway and was a huge success. Now, for the first time, it will be performed on the stage of the Odessa Academic Theater of Musical Comedy named after M. Vodyanoy! The musical's director, Volodymyr Podgorodynskyi, has staged a performance about freedom of art and morality, where love stands against hypocrisy. You will see the cancan and its queen, the skirt — wide, thick, white, which hides or, on the contrary, reveals, seduces, frightens, but undoubtedly attracts. After all, the cancan is an allegory of freedom of spirit! The heroes of the musical know what it means to laugh through pain, and they are happy when they dance the cancan. And happiness cannot be illegal. If you also want to get your piece of happiness, we invite you to “Can-can”!
