Princess of the Circus
operetta in 2 acts
Stage version by Heorhiy Kovtun
"Again to the sea of lights..."
It happens that people's fate is shaped contrary to their wishes. When this happens, a person faces a choice - fight or flight. A vivid example of such a situation is the basis of the plot of Imre Kalman's operetta The Circus Princess. When the composer had the idea, he said: "I have already written operettas set in a theatre, in front of a theatre, behind the scenes of a theatre, and now I want to choose a circus as a place of action." On 26 March 1926, the new operetta Die Zirkusprinzesse was performed with triumph at the An der Wien Theatre in Vienna.
The operetta "The Circus Princess" combines enchanting melodies, intricacies of intrigue, a whirlwind of feelings and a unique sense of celebration that the circus brings. So, we meet in the theatre to answer the main question: can an honourable woman marry the "king of the arena"? Yes, but then she herself rhymes with the title of "circus princess". However, what does the title matter if the two are destined for each other?
